How to prepare for a meeting with a future employer

Career fairs, networking events, a job interview… Regardless of the setting, that first meeting with a future employer is crucial. Making a good first impression is critical. Are you ready?

1) Who is my future employer?

Getting to know your future employer is key to determining whether you’ll fit in with the organization, as well being ready to ask the right questions at the right time.

Learn more about the organization. Visit the organization’s website to learn more about its operations, values, mission, working environment, and job opportunities.

Rely on your contacts. Do you know someone who works for a company you’re interested in?  Give that person a call to find out how they feel about their employer, advancement opportunities, team spirit… In a nutshell, the experience as a whole!

Learn more by showing interest. Score extra points by asking questions. For example, show interest in the corporate culture.

  • What are some of the social activities?
  • Are accomplishments recognized?
  • Does the company value physical activity?
  • Do they encourage continuing education?
  • How is the workload organized?
2) Who am I?

Take some time to reflect on what defines you, rather than coming up with boilerplate answers to hypothetical questions. Be yourself!

  • What draws you to a given career?
  • What are some of your aspirations and strengths?
  • What academic, social or athletic achievements are you particularly proud of?

Remember: there are no wrong answers! Be frank in discussing yourself and your expectations.  You have everything to gain by being honest.

3) How should I present myself?

Pick your outfit carefully. A conservative attire will ensure that your interviewers are truly interested in what you have to say and offer.  Refer to the organization’s dress code to avoid any sartorial mishaps.

Shine a light on your personality. Express yourself in clear and simple terms. It’s an excellent way to get your message across in a clear and convincing manner.

Listen! Provide brief and clear answers to the questions you’re asked.  Check in with your interviewers to ensure they’re satisfied with your answers. This suggests that you’re committed to excellence.

The meeting is coming to an end… Congratulations! You’ve made your mark thanks to your flawless preparation. Now’s the time to ask about the next steps. Before leaving, reiterate your interest and thank the interviewers, the receptionist and others who participated in the activity.

When you get home, write your interviewers a note thanking them for their time. Make sure to include a summary of why you’re so interested in joining the company. This is a great way to demonstrate your interest and motivation!
